Research the Cure webinar – EB-associated squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most frequent cancer that affects patients with EB, and it can be very aggressive. Patients with RDEB are most at risk of developing SCC, but it can also arise in patients with Junctional EB and Kindler Syndrome.

As such, it is a hugely important research area and the focus of our final Research the Cure webinar of 2023.

We were grateful to have Prof Andrew South (Professor in the Department of Dermatology & Cutaneous Biology, Thomas Jefferson University) join us earlier this month for an informative webinar on EB and cancer, current treatment options, and the outlook for the future. Andy has been researching EB-associated SCC for more than a decade.

In this excerpt, Andy talks about why SCC is important in EB.

Looking to the future, there is an ongoing clinical trial of rigosertib, which is part funded by Cure EB (read more about the rigosertib trial) as well as work on immunotherapy (enhancing the immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells) as well as ways to prevent cancer in EB.

Thank you to everyone who attended. If you have any feedback on the webinar, or if there are topics that you would like to see covered at future research webinars, please do get in touch.

Very informative and clear descriptions of science behind cancer, comparison to non-EB cancer and useful images.
